Microsoft NetShow Player is a legacy streaming media player developed by Microsoft Corporation in the late 1990s as part of the NetShow platform. It enabled playback of live and on-demand audio and video delivered over the Internet or corporate networks. The player supported Microsoft’s Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) and streams served via the Microsoft Media Server (MMS) protocol. Key capabilities included basic transport controls, full-screen playback, buffering for smoother performance on low-bandwidth connections, and integration with web pages through an ActiveX control. Distributed for Windows 95 and Windows NT, NetShow Player was eventually superseded by Windows Media Player, which absorbed its streaming technologies and became Microsoft’s primary media playback application.
